Fastest and slowest cycling races of 2011

Posted on

A summary of the fastest and slowest races of 2011. Surprisingly only 3 races from Europe in the top 10. Top 3 were in China. Part of that can be explained by the short length of the stages.

Facts:

  • All races of UCI class 2.1, 1.1 and above were compared.
  • The time trials will be the topic in a future post
  • Speed is calculated by dividing distance through time.
  • A total of 492 races

Fastest was stage 1 “Xi’an Road Race” of the tour of China. A short circuit stage of 129 km in bad weather that ended in a bunch sprint. Read the race report on www.cyclingnewsasia.com. The report states that average speed was 49.137 km/h. That suggests that the race was shorter than 129km, but it would still be top 10

Second fastest race was also in China. The final stage in the tour of Beijing (World Tour). The 118km short stage was won in a bunch sprint by Denis Galimzyanov.

The slowest race was the heroic giro d’Italia stage 15: Conegliano – Gardeccia-Val di Fassa. It was 229 km and it took Mikel Nieve 7:27:14 to win the race. That was longer than any classic. Read the race report on cyclingnews.com
